Things you can do as a homeowner to make your house less attractive to pests
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Create an 18" border immediately around the perimeter of the house. The ideal fill would be rocks, wood chips, or mulch. The border should be free of plantings to deny cover to insects, snakes, and rodents.
-Eliminate all moisture problems such as leaking gutters, roofs, window and door framings. Pull grade away so there is no wood to soil contact. The grade (soil) should be diverted away and downhill from the house.
-Remove leaves from the perimeter of the house. These are harborage sites for Carpenter Ants, Spiders, Mice, Snakes, Sow Bugs, Pill Bugs, Millipedes, Centipedes, and Earwigs. Remove especially the leaves out from under low ornamentals such as Myrtle, English Ivy, Pachysandra, etc...
-No trees or shrubs should be touching or hovering over the house. This provides an avenue for insects and animals to enter the house, restricts airflow, retains moisture, and blocks sunlight. Climbing ivy attached to your home, if not removed, should be treated every spring!
-Clean your gutters twice a year for proper drainage. Add gutter extentions.
-Remove debris, clutter, and wood piles away from the house as these provide harborage for rodents, snakes and spiders. Remove any standing water.
-Seal up all cracks and crevices where rodents may enter @ ½" or more. Seal all cracks where wasps and bees may enter. Paint surfaces where Carpenter Bees are a problem. Place a working dehumidifier in the basement.
-Windows and screens need to be tight fitting and outdoor lighting should be of the non-insect attracting type or positioned away from the house.
-FYI - The State DEP has a prenotification registry for people who want to be notified when pesticides are applied to abutting properties.
